Melasma

Melasma is a common skin condition characterised by symmetrical brown or grey-brown patches, most often appearing on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and nose. It is caused by overproduction of melanin due to factors such as sun exposure, hormonal fluctuations (including pregnancy and oral contraceptive use), and genetic predisposition. Unlike isolated sun spots, melasma sits deeper in the skin, making it more challenging to treat. Successful management often requires a multi-modal approach combining pigment suppression, targeted laser therapy, and strict photoprotection.

Recommended treatments

Pico Laser

Pico laser delivers ultra-short pulses of energy to break up pigment particles while minimising heat damage to surrounding skin. This makes it safer for melasma-prone skin compared to traditional lasers, especially in darker skin types. A course of treatments can significantly lighten patches, improve overall tone, and reduce recurrence when combined with ongoing pigment control measures.

Compounded Skincare

Customised prescription skincare formulations containing pigment-regulating ingredients—such as hydroquinone, tranexamic acid, kojic acid, and retinoids—are key to long-term melasma control. These inhibit melanin production, accelerate skin cell turnover, and improve overall clarity. Formulations are tailored to individual skin needs to maximise efficacy and minimise irritation.

Compounded Oral Medication

Low-dose oral medications, such as tranexamic acid, can help reduce melasma activity from within. This approach is often reserved for resistant cases and is used under medical supervision to ensure safety and optimal results.

Strict Sun Protection

Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen use is critical to prevent melasma worsening. SPF 50+ formulas with iron oxides help protect against visible light, which also contributes to pigmentation. Sun avoidance strategies and protective clothing are essential parts of every treatment plan.
